The Machine Learning Research Lab (MLRL) is looking for a student assistant (d/f/m) in the domain of system administration and MLOps in Munich. The MLRL is part of Volkswagen Group IT and tackles fundamental research in machine learning and optimal control. We develop new methods for generative time series modelling and control of dynamical systems. MLRL develops and maintains its own computational infrastructure for efficient and scalable machine learning research. The infrastructure is based on a kubernetes cluster with a diverse spectrum of hardware and software services. This suggests great opportunities for gaining and extending your hands-on experience in managing modern systems. The focus of this position is to maintain but also further develop the currently existing computational infrastructure.

Your Tasks

• Design and implement changes to our automated provisioning and configuration management setup.
• Install and configure new hardware (servers, network, workstations, etc.)
• Manage user accounts on different systems and services.
• Monitor and troubleshoot the operation of the infrastructure components.
• Maintain and extend our existing technical documentation and policies.
• Improve training pipelines for machine learning.

Your Qualifications

You should meet a few of these and be eager to learn about the rest:

• Student (bachelor/master) in Computer Science or related discipline.
• Interest in modern IT system administration with the emphasis on reliability and computational efficiency.
• Practical experience with Linux systems.
• Experience with bash, git and docker.
• Experience with kubernetes and a configuration management system such as ansible are desirable, but can also be learned / strengthened on the job.
• Coding skills (in particular, Python) are desirable.
